For years I have been telling myself to visit Wynwood Walls in Miami. Though it is only a 1-1/2 hour drive south of my home, I just never seemed to be able to get there. I also dislike the traffic in Miami which I have years of experience with when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale. Many times driving into Miami to work on county radio systems, parking was always a hassle. During that time 30-years ago, my memory of the Wynwood area was an all industrial, garbage all over, stink hole of a place.
But that was then and this is now!
I am glad to have finally put the memories aside and made the trip, which was on a Friday after morning rush hour.
Was it worth it?
Hell yes!
I have never seen anything like it the urban art was spilling out everywhere. Every style, full wall murals, stencil art under foot on the sidewalks, paste ups, sticker bombs and the list goes on. If you are ever in the Miami area it is a must-see! The area is a far cry from my memory of the place.
It is vibrant with colorful art as well as bars, restaurants, artist galleries and specialty shops. If you do visit look for the small six seater open taxi. My wife and I took the tour and were amazed how large an area this arts district covers. The really amazing thing is that it is ever expanding outward.
